Since CCA was founded in 2010, global efforts to support a market-based approach to address clean cooking have made progress.
Compared to a decade ago, millions more families now have access to and are using cleaner, more modern stoves and fuels. Years of global communications and advocacy efforts by CCA and its partners have helped ensure that clean cooking be made part of many countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Climate Agreement.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has recognized clean cooking as a means of addressing short-lived climate forcers like black carbon. In addition, a clean cooking indicator was included in and is being tracked as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. While investment levels are far from where they need to be, more investors are now recognizing that emerging business models can tap into unrealized market opportunities. Despite its far-reaching benefits, clean cooking is too often seen as a second-tier priority. The level of funding and investment in the sector has not matched the global magnitude of the challenge.
Debt, equity, and grant financing for clean cooking businesses tracked by CCA totaled US$70 million in 2019—significantly less than the overall spending of US$4 billion required annually to achieve universal access by 2030. Similarly, clean cooking does not garner the same level of international attention as many other development challenges, despite the fact that traditional cooking methods contribute to more deaths than malaria and tuberculosis combined.
Filling this wide investment and engagement gap—and making clean cooking a top-tier global priority to achieve universal access—will require a sustained, well-coordinated effort that harnesses strengths and resources from a broad range of actors and channels significant funding to the sector. To facilitate this much needed coordination, CCA has developed a Systems Strategy that aims to unlock a new trajectory for clean cooking. This is just one of CCA’s many activities to accelerate universal access to clean cooking by 2030.
