Improve health, protect the climate and environment, empower women, and help families save time and money by creating a thriving global market for cleaner, more modern household cooking solutions.
Globally, three billion people cook over polluting, open fires that burns heavily-polluting, inefficient fuels like wood, charcoal, coal, and kerosene. Cooking this way causes serious health and environmental impacts, disproportionally affecting the lives and livelihoods of women and children.
As a leading cause of air pollution, polluting and inefficient cooking methods contribute to the preventable death of nearly 4 million people each year and sicken millions more. Lack of access to clean fuels forces women and children to spend hours cooking and gathering fuel (5 hours per day in some cases), time that could be spent getting an education, caring for family, or earning an income.
Yet, clean cooking solutions exist that can dramatically reduce exposure to harmful cookstove smoke and lessen climate and environmental impacts. Use of clean cookstoves and fuels can minimize the amount of time women and girls spend gathering fuel, while providing economic opportunities in communities around the world through market development activities.
We believe the most effective and sustainable way to address this issue is by establishing a global market for cleaner, more modern cooking solutions around the world. Our work aims to address the market barriers that impede the production, deployment, and use of cleaner, more efficient cookstoves and fuels in developing countries, creating a world where no one is left behind, and universal access to clean cooking becomes a reality.
The Clean Cooking Alliance is a network of global partners working to create a thriving global market for cleaner, more modern household cooking solutions.
Hosted by the UN Foundation, the Alliance was launched in 2010 by then U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. We began with an ambitious 10-year goal to foster the adoption of cleaner, more modern cookstoves and fuels in 100 million households by 2020. While we are well on our way to meet this goal, it’s only the beginning. We are working to ensure universal adoption of clean cooking solutions by:
- Enhancing demand for clean cookstoves and fuels;
- Strengthening the supply of clean cookstoves and fuels; and
- Fostering the enabling environment for a thriving market for clean cooking solutions.
The Clean Cooking Alliance secretariat is guided by a Leadership Council composed of select high-level stakeholders, donors and experts who advise in all strategic matters, including decisions related to its mission, programmatic focus, growth, and development. The day-to-day work is led by a team of deeply-committed professionals working across five continents toward universal access to clean cooking.
